(Cities 92.9 Newsroom)- Just doing a normal run outside seems like a thing of the past. Everyone seems to be doing a zombie run or a spartan death race or some other themed event. 5 Khaos is another variation with obstacles ranging from mud and water to ropes and climbing walls. The difference with 5 Khaos is that a participant has four options. They can do the course straight through like normal, they can do push-ups or sit-ups instead of the obstacle, or choose between two versions of the obstacles. Finally runners can buy $10 mulligans proceeds from which go to raise for money for Recovery, and help drug addicts. To register just go to www.5khaos.com. Entry is $48-58 depending on when you register. The race takes place in Carlock September 15.

Here is the Morning Rush’s interview with a race board member, Nick Moran.

Down and dirty: Runners can try their luck in Carlock.
By Paul Swiech | pswiech@pantagraph.com

CARLOCK — If a five-kilometer run with 15 obstacles — including climbing ropes, mud pits and objects to hurdle over and crawl under — is your idea of a good time, mark Sept. 15 on your calendar. An obstacle race called 5Khaos will begin 9 a.m. Sept. 15 on the grounds of Hunter Oaks Equestrian Trails near Carlock, organizer Nick Moran of Normal said. Check-in registration begins at 7 a.m.

Moran — who has done a type of obstacle racing called Spartan Racing — believes that an obstacle race will be a fun challenge for Central Illinoisans of all fitness levels. He explained that when runners at 5Khaos encounter an obstacle, they have three choices: overcome the obstacle; attempt the obstacle and if they can’t do it, complete an alternative exercise such as 15 pushups; or purchase mulligans on race day that will allow the runner to spend a mulligan on each obstacle that he bypasses.

In fairness to racers, runners who use mulligans can’t win the race, Moran said.“This is more than feasible for the beginning runner as well as someone who wants to compete,” Moran said. “It’s all about personal challenge. The main thing is to get people to enjoy mud runs.”

The other goal is to raise money for Recovery Starts Today, a Bloomington-based, not-for-profit organization that supports individuals and families going through drug addiction recovery, said Moran, president of Recovery Starts Today.

The organization provides emergency housing and emergency medical assistance to people admitted to McLean County’s Drug Court who need that additional help, said Moran. The race registration fee is $38 but will increase closer to the event. Runners may register at www.5Khaos.com.
